Many employees do not make the most of their holidays because they are still thinking about work a great deal of the time, it has been suggested.

Psychologist Mo Shapiro said that people need to prepare themselves before they leave the workplace so that they are in the right frame of mind for their break.

If they do not do this then they will often not be getting the full benefit of their holiday and the chance to rest and recharge their batteries.

Ms Shapiro said that "our body and mind is still running on overdrive from work mode and we haven't properly switched off so it's really important to make that break for yourself".

Leaving out-of-work messages and making sure cover is in place are some ways for employees to reassure themselves, she suggested.

Research for Keycamp, carried out by OnePoll discovered that 67 per cent of people think their daily lives are stressful.
